Task 5

Task 5: Numbers 1 to 5 (Part One)
For Task 5, students will independently make sets of five objects, decompose the five objects into two sets (0 and 5, 1 and 4, 2 and 3, 3 and 2, 4 and 1, or 5 and 0), and then represent the results on a five frame.

*Note- you can substitute manipulatives for what you have available to you.
 
Hula Hoop Game- For this game, students will work in partners. They will need five manipulatives and the circle paper. Each student takes turn tossing all five manipulatives onto the circle paper. The partner must identify how many manipulatives landed inside the circle and how many manipulatives landed outside of the circle. *Note-This game can also be played using an actual hula-hoop and bigger manipulatives (such as stuffed animals or bean bags).
 
Multilink Cube Booklets
For this activity, students can work in partners. They will need a Multilink Cube Recording Sheet, ten multilink cubes (5 of one color, 5 of another color) and 2 crayons that much the color of multilink cubes. Students follow the booklet and create combinations of five using multilink cubes. Students then use crayons and fill in their recording sheets.
 
Penguin Booklets
For this activity, students can work in partners. They will need a Penguin Recording Sheet, ten penguin manipulatives (5 of one color, 5 of another color) and 2 crayons that much the color of the penguins. Students follow the booklet and place penguins on corresponding color dots on each page. Students then use crayons and fill in their recording sheets.
 
Hexagon Booklets
For this activity, students can work in partners. They will need a Hexagon Recording Sheet, ten worm manipulatives (5 of one color, 5 of another color) and 2 crayons that much the color of the worm manipulatives. Students follow the booklet and place worms on black lines on each page. Students then use crayons and fill in their recording sheets.
 
Cuisinare Rod Booklet
For this activity, students can work in partners. They will need a 2 yellow bars, 2 purple bars, 2 green bars, 2 red bars, and 10 white squares. Students follow the booklet and place the corresponding cuisinare rods onto the black and white pages in the booklet.
